One of three Great Rides located in Central Otago, The Roxburgh Gorge Trail is the regions shortest and most difficult, with parts of the track reaching as high as Grade 3 difficulty (intermediate).
The trail is a spectacular one-day ride from Alexandra to Lake Roxburgh Dam following the Clutha Mata-au River and provides an ever-popular means of exploring one of the most distinctive landscapes in New Zealand. Roxburgh Gorge Trail also makes for a very repeatable journey throughout the year, with every season offering a unique and rewarding experience.
Starting from Alexandra, the trail leads riders into its primary feature; Roxburgh Gorge, featuring bluffs that rise up to 350 metres above the river on either side in dramatic fashion.
Beyond the Gorge, the trail also journeys to areas of historical significance, with huts built directly into the rock by Chinese miners and the remains of two small mining settlements, evidence of the extensive gold-mining history throughout the region.
